I am no spring chicken at 65 and most people are thinking about retiring right about now. Not us. We just bit off probably more than we can ever possibly chew. We just moved on to an 8 acre farm (not bought THE farm) on 4 acres plus the 4 acres next to it. Our bodies are probably scolding us right now for doing this and saying to us “what the h-e-double-l-l are you thinking?!” But that’s not all we did. We’re setting up two areas of our property into Bed & Breakfast vacation farm stay rentals. To me this a means to and end so we can retire (maybe) but in addition to weeding, planting, marketing and whatever else a farmer does, we will have two B&B’s to keep up, clean, book, and at the ready, oh, did I forget to mention the goats too? GOATS: Right away I ran to buy four goats, three pregnant does and one young male not mature yet and still not smelling like the typical male goat smells (which requires a downwind location from your home as far away as possible) I drove three hours south on I-5 which means I had drive three hours back with four goats being tossed around in the back of the truck (and if I had known at the time I would have put diapers on them!) Of course the mess in the back of the truck was a shocker. Of the three pregnant goats, two have had babies and are nursing. One of the goats had a stillborn, it was so sad.. The male goat started to smell so bad we had to have him fixed. So what’s the upshot of this? Its fun and different to have goats. They add another dimension and six more personalities to our farm. They are so graceful to watch out in the field when we let them to graze. As a personal challenge I want to learn to milk them and do something productive with the milk, either with cheese or just enjoy drinking it. Maybe even sell it… FRESH GOAT MILK & CHEESE!
